My Scentsy Story. (Excerpts from my book Victim or Victorious) I know you have a story too and I hope to hear it soon.
"The future belongs to those who believe in their dreams."- Eleanor Roosevelt “The future was mine if I would dare to dream.”
My grandfather died leaving my mother alone on the streets in her early teens. She was afraid, cold and hungry when a woman offered her food and shelter in exchange for a few favors. As a result my mom became a teenage prostitute addicted to drugs and alcohol.
A few years later she married my father. She didn’t want children. So when she had me, and I was born with a heart defect, she didn’t know how to cope. I was told that when I would cry she would beat me over the head with a wooden spoon until I stopped crying.
Six years and two sisters later, after much neglect and being exposed to many forms of abuse. My mother had enough. One day after my father left for work she said to me: “Get your sisters and I will take you girls to the zoo.” This was so exciting. This was unlike her. I couldn’t wait to go to the zoo and actually do something fun with my mother.
However after we arrived at the city where the zoo was, she asked if we would rather go on an airplane ride. Yea things were getting even better.
We flew to another state when we got off the plane a woman met us, years later I would learn that this was the same woman who had offered my mother room and board if she would do a few favors for her. We went and stayed the night with this woman. The next morning we got in a car and drove for a long time, out into the middle of the California dessert.
We stopped at a small Hispanic barrio. My mother got us out of the car and then pointing to some puppies she said:
“Play with the puppies and I will be back in a few hours.”
I wish I had paid more attention to my mom instead of the puppies that day. I wish I had hugged her tight and looked into her eyes one last time and said I love you mommy and heard her say the same.
Why because my mom never came back. People often ask: “What happened next.” You know I don’t remember much, I am sure that is a blessing in disguise. I know that when we were found they said we were wearing only our underwear, we were skin and bones covered with lice.
My aunt and uncle were the ones who found us. A man came up to me. He kept calling me Becky. I was looking at him strangely and confused, I was wondering who he was and how he knew me. Then like you see on TV when someone’s memory comes back woosh-wooh-woosh-
That’s how it felt. This horrible flood of emotions came over me I started screaming hysterically I want my mom I want my mom I want my mom. They took us home to our dad.
I wish I could say that we lived happily ever after. However the next 5 years of my life brought even greater challenges. I ended up in a Foster home.
During these years I had no self esteem, I was tall, gangly, uncoordinated, I had bushy eyebrows that would give Godzilla a run for his money and I wore bottle thick glasses. I had no friends.
I was scared, I hated life, I could not see a purpose for living. At age 13 I tried to take my life
One day as I got off the school bus, I noticed another bus pulling into the drop off area and it was going too fast. The bus driver was paying attention to rowdy kids in the back of the bus. I knew all I had to do was wait for him to get close enough and then step in front of the bus and it would be all over. So that’s what I did, As the bus approached I waited for just the right moment and just as I stepped forward A kid grabbed me from behind and said:
“What are you trying to do kill yourself?”
“Yeah, mind your own business!”
The next thing I knew I was in the school counselor’s office. This was a turning point in my life. See the counselor asked me a very profound question, one that began to change the direction of my life, even though at that moment I didn’t realize it. She asked me if I had a dream.
“A dream I said are you kidding? What good would a dream do for someone like me?”
She told me to look inside and find my dream. She told me that what I was going through was tough but it would pass and when it did I would have a future if I would only choose it. And she was right.
"The future belongs to those who believe in their dreams."-Eleanor Roosevelt
That’s what my counselor was telling me, the future Was mine if I would dare to dream.”-
Of course my life didn’t magically turn around at that moment. Whose does?
Earl Nightingale grew up in the depression, yet despite his circumstances he became a great leader, author and motivational speaker. He said:
"You can predict a person's future and determine his bank balance if you know two things: the books he reads, and the people he associates with."
I agree with Mr. Nightingale completely, in my book Victim or Victorious I share the victory tools I used to overcome the affects of my past.
If I want to keep my sanity, and my motivation going, I have to listen to or read from a book every day, usually while I am driving or washing dishes.
People tend to think that success is like magic. That there are a few choice people who are blessed and all they do is walk blissfully into success, health and wealth and live happy ever after. If there is one thing that I have learned on my journey it is this:
Success does not come easy it is learned and it is earned. Ahh but that means if I could learn it anyone can learn to succeed to.
Dale Carnegie said:
"Believe that you will succeed. Believe it firmly, and you will then do what is necessary to bring success about."
The most powerful part of this quote is the part that reads and you will then do what is necessary to bring about success.
Another of my favorite success tips is:
“Success often comes after a misstep in the right direction.”
Yes you heard that right success often comes after a misstep in the right direction. It’s more about movement and doing than the perfection of the action.
Let me tell you I have had a lot of missteps. I started my first business in the 3rd grade on the playground. What kind of business does a 3rd grader start? Well I saw a niche in the market and I thought I would fill it. See I was one of the only girls who had their ears pierced. It had been done the old fashioned way with a big needle. So hey, I saw the demand and started and ear piercing business during recess. Of course it was a classic misstep and I was shut down. Imagine that…something about lack of licensing.
In my early twenties I joined a well known cosmetic company. I was so excited about the positive energy I felt at the meetings and the promise of becoming like the other women and having everything I could ever want. If I was successful I would never have to worry about being homeless again.
I held my first party. After all the women had their makeovers and were chatting. I just looked at these young moms…told them they were all beautiful and to go home and spend their money on more important things. Obviously I wasn’t cut out for this. I felt like a failure and returned to being a retail manager.
Eventually the desire to have my own business got the best of me. I tried everything from making gift baskets, cleaning houses and even starting a candle company. I actually had pretty good success with that one. Working with scents led my husband and I to creating our own skin care line with an off shoot of a lip balm promotional company. www.lipnotes.com At last we were enjoying success.
So with two successful businesses why am I with Scentsy?
I was still feeling unfulfilled, there had to be more. I wanted something to challenge me. Something that would allow me to work with and encourage others to discover that they could do have so much more. I knew I wasn’t alone. Many people face challenges that leave them feeling undeserving and incapable of great things.
Next money and security are huge motivators. Multiple streams of income are always a good idea. Direct sales is the only place you can start with nothing and end up having it all. Unlimited opportunities to grow, succeed, life coach and get paid top dollar to do so.
People ask what I owe my rapid success too. It’s a combination of things: a great company, simple product that I believe in, desire and freedom to create and run my business my way. I live in a very small community of approximately 600 people. The town where I shop has only 6000 people. To some this is an excuse because they don’t know very many people and their town is too small to draw from. Guess what? When I started with Scentsy twenty one months ago there were already several dozen Scentsy consultants in my town. I could have let that stop me. I realized though that if you think small you get small if you think big you get big.
It so exciting to break through small thinking barriers. I am delighted to share that I have a frontline Director who lives around the corner and three second generation Directors who live in town as well. My organization has over 2100 people and is growing daily. I now make a six figure income. What if I didn’t believe in the beauty of a dream.
Direct Selling opens up the world to all of us. I built my business locally and then spread out using the internet, traveling to events and shipping basket parties to reach other cities and states. Basket and on-line parties allow me to have hostesses anywhere.
All of these different avenues allow me to succeed. I am motivated by the success and different levels I can work toward and achieve month in and month out. It thrills me to create ideas and tools to build my business. And then turn around and share them with my organization. Nothing feels better than celebrating with them when they accomplish things that their “itty bitty icky committee” formed by negative thoughts and well meaning friends and family told them they couldn’t do.
Years ago I found an illustration of a mountain climber heading up a mountain. The caption read:
“You can’t help someone to the top of the mountain without getting their yourself.”
I have kept it and look at it often. I have found this to be true and better yet the view at the top is so much better shared with others. Wow the beauty of Direct Marketing is it is all about people, team work and helping others.
They say do what you love and you will never work another day in your life.
How true! It is a business about people. It goes with you wherever you go. Talk to people, show interest in them and before you know they are asking you what you do.
And before you know it you are writing an order, booking a party or adding a new team member.
My best advice is to ask yourself: “Are you living or accepting your life.” If you are accepting it, Wake Up! Start experimenting; find a product that you like. Find a sponsor that is someone you admire and would like to become.
Then live, breathe and expose your product. Take it wherever you go. People who want Scentsy are everywhere and most of them are trying to figure out how to make more money too. Your customer base and future team members are all around you.. They are sitting next to you at your kid’s game; they are standing next to you at the post office and working out next to you at the gym. You don’t have to convince others. It’s a matter of letting them experience it for themselves and then asking them three golden questions:
Would you like to buy it, earn it for free or become a business owner like me?
I went through brief encounters with a few different companies before I found my home at Scentsy. That is okay. I figure if we can go to the store and buy a pair of shoes we thought we would love and then change our mind it’s our right. It’s not the end of the world. And neither is trying on different things to find your place. Give Scentsy a try and find your home like I did.
